Events Steward: can you stay calm when working at a busy festival?
Our #4 temp job is a festive job! When the festival season is on there are plenty of opportunities to work as an Events Steward. This could either be as a volunteer (like our consultant Ivor Welfare sometimes does!), or paid. The primary role of a steward is to help provide excellent customer care and to assist with the delivery of a safe and enjoyable experience for festival audiences.
Being an Events Steward is a great way of sensing the atmosphere of the festival while being there for free. You can pick and choose your favourite festivals. However, the Glastonbury website warns: ”None of these jobs are an easy way into the Festival: they involve hard work and not much time off over the Festival period.”
The bigger festivals, like Glastonbury, don’t have many paid jobs available. The same crew returns year on year. The only temporary jobs they usually have are admin jobs.
However, another interesting option is to work for your ticket. With regards to Glastonbury, if you work 3 x 8 hours shifts, you can go and enjoy the rest of the festival for free. Oasis Carnival Club (Frome), if you are interested, recruit stewards to work during the Glastonbury festival, making it possible for you to earn your ticket while working at the festival.
If you are interested in working as an Events Steward, it may be helpful to hold specific qualifications, such as medical, paramedic or first aid qualifications. You can either apply to a festival organization directly or check which recruitment agencies work with festival organisations.
Salary: £ 7.5-8.5 p/h
Fact: You could also volunteer or earn your ticket while you work.
